A rare species of macaque found only in the dense evergreen forests of the Western
Ghats. They spend 90-99% of their time high in the canopy.
Unique among the 16 species of Macaques, both males and females make mating calls.
Only males have projecting canines.
Their name comes because of the tuft of hair at the end of its tail similar to a lion.
Researchers have identified 17 different calls or sounds made by them to communicate with each other.
After a fight, which is more frequent when there are females in heat, 60% of reconciliations
are initiated by the aggressor, and 40% by the victim.
Huge cheek pouches enable them to quickly gather food in times of danger. When fully extended,
their cheek pouches can store an equivalent to their stomach's capacity.

Lion Tail Macaques at Inheritance India :
There is a resident troop of about 30-35 LTM's on our land. They remain in their shy,
wild state, which keeps observers at a respectable distance. We are on the lookout for
a sensitive, and dedicated individual who would spend time and learn more about them.
